Rebecca's hands knotted and unknotted as she waited for the arrival of the headmaster. The office chair in which she was seated swiveled quickly from side to side a few times before she forced herself to stop and sit still. Leaning back, she bit her lip and waited. It would never do for Dr. Kerr to come in and see her as such a nervous wreck...but gosh this was embarrassing!
Looking down at her left wrist, Becky traced her new "Junior Agent" rank wrist band with a sigh. At least she was done with basic training, that she could definitely be grateful for. Being seventeen years old and going through basic training with a bunch of younger kids had been terribly humiliating. At least now she would be around kids her own age, even if one was going to be paired with her as her -crap, she could barely say it!- her handler.
Rebecca closed her eyes and allowed herself a long groan.

As Dr Kerr walked into his office, he hardly expected Rebecca to already be there. He looked down at his watch--either it was slow, or the girl was early. No matter, he decided. As he walked into the room, he heard her groan, and allowed himself a small smile. No doubt, she was nervous about this meeting, and perhaps even somewhat upset about being older than the other Junior Agents. He wished he could change that for her, but he could not. Rules were rules, and if he changed them for one student, he would catch rebuke from all sides.
For her sake more than anything, he cleared his throat. "Is the prospect of being here that terrible?" He asked gently as he made his way to the chair behind his desk. His expression was neutral, but his eyes were full of laughter.

Rebecca's eyes flashed open at the sound of Dr. Kerr's voice. A second later she was on her feet saluting. "Um, no sir," she said quickly, feeling her cheeks coloring, "I was just...thinking." For a second she stood there awkwardly, at a loss as to what to say.
Suddenly she remembered herself and went on with the lines that she had practiced in the mirror that morning. "Junior Agent Rebecca Swenson, reporting for my post-basic training review and handler assignment," she said, resisting the temptation to hide under her chair. She stood there for a second longer before remembering the folder in her left hand. "Oh! And my records, including my basic training instructors' reports," she said, handing Dr. Kerr a folder that was marked "Confidential" in bright red...the same color as her face at that moment.

Dr. K was unable to hide his smile. He took the folder and motioned with his hand for her to sit down. "We aren't quite that military, Rebecca. Saluting and standing at attention isn't really necessary." He sat down in his chair and opened the folder. He read the information before closing the folder and looking up at her, a few minutes later.
"Well, the reports from your instructors tell me I have nothing to be worried about." He paused and took a breath before continuing. "As far as the matter of assigning you a handler, I'd like to give you some say in the matter, since being under the authority of someone your own age may prove. . . difficult.
"I have a lad in mind who I think you would get on well with. He's about your age, and rather laid-back. But would you be uncomfortable being paired with a boy rather than a girl?"

Rebecca nodded and sat down at Dr. Kerr's invitation. She was quite relieved to find that the entire campus wasn't as rigidly military as basic training had been and this lifted a great weight off her mind. By the time Dr. K finished reading the report, Rebecca had managed to regain her composure and get her complexion back to its normal color.
Her shoulders stiffened a tad as the headmaster began talking about assigning her a handler but she relaxed as he spoke favorably about one particular Senior Agent. She gave an easy shrug of her shoulders, "I've had good friends of both the boy and girl variety...it doesn't matter much to me as long as I get along with the individual person. If you want to pair me with a boy, I'm perfectly fine with that."

He nodded, expression showing he was pleased to hear this. "Well, all that's left now if for me to talk with him about it. Right now, he's off completing an assignment for me, but I'll talk to him first thing in the morning and let you know sometime tomorrow." He smiled gently. "I suppose that's it, unless you have any questions. If you don't, you're free to go."

||No prob, I'm having the same dilemma||
She nodded as her headmaster continued on, for the first time feeling curious about her future handler rather than just dreading the assignment. When Dr. K had finished she quickly ran through her mind for any questions and then shook her head. "Nope, no questions. Thank you very much, Dr. Kerr," she said, smiling for the first time. Then, giving a farewell nod of her head, got up and headed for the door.
Making her way down the hallway, Rebecca was deep in thought. So, that was over with...not half as bad as she'd expected. Dr. Kerr seemed like an excellent man to serve under and she even had reason to think her junior agency might be a positive experience.
Glancing around to make sure nobody...well nobody visible anyway...was watching, she skipped a few relieved steps before turning down the hallway in the direction of her dorm.

I'm going to lock this topic, because as far as I can tell, it's done.
